How do all,

I'm going to start doing a bit of research into this, as as far as searching for useful information on the net I come in fairly useless. Any know of any threads where lads have done a BAM conversion into a Mk4 Golf? Or have any info themselves?

Don't build what you can buy.

You could justify it if it was a V6 conversion so you could avoid the massive tax but just buy a cupra R or K04 Mk4 and transplant whatever bits you want to keep from yours before you sell it on, not what you want to hear but it'll be alot less heartache and expense.

I don't think you can buy a 225 bhp Golf?

No I want to do the conversion, I know it never came in the Golf, but it did in the TT and the S3 afaik? I was origionally going to just put a 1.8T from a Gti into it but then I really should of just bought a GTI.

My plan is to buying something crashed and take everything I need for it, breaks the whole lot included, and sell the interior parts etc. I just need to know what complications I'll encur, and more to the point what gearbox etc. to use to get it back to FWD.

I'm way to attached to my own car, not a hope of me selling.

Edit: It's not about money or just buying a Gti! That's far fromt the point!

a cupra R is FWD.

6sp box, you'll need ECU loom clocks keys breaks front and rear, brake lines all of them, fuel pump, hubs have to be changed etc etc

edit, clutch and break cylinders will all have to be changed to. also you'll have to bring over every sensor the 1.8T use's to run (there a bitch with this stuff)

and you have to go fly by wire as well to run a 1.8T from a cupra R etc...

I know the Cupra R is front wheel

I'm just saying wouldn't it be cheaper to get a Cupra R box and a full TT, assuming a full Cupra would make more than a TT is it was for breaking?

There never was a 225 golf but the k04 conversion isn't a big job.

razor is right ideally its a crashed cupra R you'll need, the 4mo gearbox of a TT [I think all the 225 TT's were 4mo?] or S3 won't be much use to you, it'll be worth the premium so you get the right gearbox and those nice brembos.

Your next problem is that they all the 225's run a different steering rack and front suspension setup to say a golf gti so you will have to transplant EVERYTHING including all the traction control setup that im guessing your golf doesn't have?

Thanks for that. I really do plan on changing the whole lot, I'll have the car taken about anyway so I'm sure a bit of suspension work won't add too much to the task

... The brembos would be a very nice touch alright, but I'm just concerned over the rarity/ higher price of a Cupra R over a TT for breaking, considering I won't be selling a whole lot off it to make my money back. The interior maybe, dash, panels (what's left of them) etc. The TT badge I'll be keeping though

Im all up for doing daft things but can I just step in now and say this is going to be a very big undertaking, as in, massive.
And its going to cost possibly as much if not more as a if you were to put that money with your 1.4 and buy a tuned gti putting out your same target hp.

@ Gary, have you factored in the fact that you might go insane as well? Are you married? Because you wont be by the time your finished

i dont think you under stand the scale of what u want to do and how much of a ball breaker the ECU in those 1.8T's is and all it ancillary's

buy a GTI with a fucked 1.8T in it and drop in your BAM much easier.

I'm not concerned, and I know it's going to cost me a fuck load, but infairness, I could do this or go away and buy 15 or six grand worth of a car and not be as happy. People have spent thousands and thousands beyond question on there cars, I just have a thing for my Golf and I can promise you unless I die and someone sells it behind my back, there won't be another owner going onto that logbook.

Why the attraction with a BAM? I don't know tbh, basically because it's not a 180bhp, and it's something a bit different.

I'm insane as it is with the amount of grief cars give me, it's a love hate relationship. I know it's going to be a bollix of a job, it'll keep me going though. I don't plan to start accumulating parts until next Feb (unless I come across them at the right price) and hoping to have it done for Vage '10 (some hope of that

And god no, far from married

Does anyone know the internal differences between the bam and all the others? If the rods are the same then I really wouldent bother?

#23 ·
As long as you realise that the car you love too much to sell will have to be completely ripped apart, that bits will never go back "right", that it may never actually make it back onto the road again and that 1.8T's can give plenty trouble before you go ripping them out and shoving them into another car then I wish you the best of luck and hope that you will put a 1.4 badge on the back when she's finished

There is not a whole lot of difference between a BAM engine and something like an AUQ (180) engine. They can all handle about 350ish bhp on standard rods.
I think what your planning is a lot of work and money for something that could be done for far less if you buy a complete car.
