I've just put my Golf 3 1.4 engine back together with a new head gasket.
The engine was completely locked. After removing the head again, I realised that the pistons actually protrude slightly beyond the block at TDC. The gasket set I was sold contained a head gasket which lined up the holes (water and oil) perfectly but was only 0.5mm thick. This was causing the pistons to hit the flat head.
On investigation, the gasket part no. is listed as correct for a 1.4 ABD engine.
Are there variants of ABD engines that I need to check for the correct gasket?
