The front suspension is the main issue with them. Any rattles, bangs or clunks generally mean one or more of the 8 aluminium suspension arms are on the way out.

They can suffer from running problems as well due to dirty throttle bodies etc but in general they are a good car.

Incidentally the 1.8 would be a much better option if you could go for one over the 1.6.

Make sure upper and lower front suspension arms have been replaced under warranty.

Track rod ends also fall asunder.

Beware faulty door locks-shared problem with golfs/boras/passats.

Boot lid actuator fails, locking you out of the boot.

Catalytic converters........can break inside and rattle........expensive to buy and an NCT emmissions failure.

Lambda probes-prone to problems.

Instrument clusters can go mental for no reason whatsover!

Air mass meters can also fail, leading to poor engine performance, stalling, rough idling.

I think you might be getting mixed up in your A4s. The door locks on the 98 type A4 are different to the Golf/Passat ones and don't give much bother.

They also have a mechanical boot lock, not an actuator like the 01-> A4s.

I have driven them both and the 1.8 is the one to go for if you can, its a bit like a 1.4 golf or a 1.6 golf, the 1997 1.8 A4 is a nice car
