17's On A Mk4?

So, finished college for the summer now, and thankfully with the family business to work in (filling station), I'll have a few extra euro to save [ie "invest" in the golf]
Image

Top of the list is new alloys / refurb the old ones...
She's on 15" stock alloys at the mo, which I quite like... "fingered" avus ones.... kinda unusual etc..
I was thinking of 17's for comfort as oppposed to full out 18's as I've been in some golf's on 18's and found them quite rough. I do nearly 600 mile some weeks so comfort is quite a priority...
are 17's a good compromise? or if I really want comfort just get my stock ones touched up? Is refurbing stock alloys like beating a dead horse??
any and all advice appreciated lads..
BTW I was aiming at rs6's [the older style 5 spoke] but any wheel considered... maybe r32 reps...

AND.. while I'm at it, does the order of bigger wheels and lowering make any diff or would it be ok maybe not to lower her? As already I find she can scrape occasionally in tight spots...

17s are fine on a mk4, but not on stock suspension. Mk4s look crap on standard wheels with standard suspension, they look worse on 17s/18s with standard suspension.

As for the wheels, please for the love of great dancing Jehovah don't be another mk4 owner with replica wheels. Have a look around, theres plenty of sets of cheap nice genuine wheels out there.

there are loads of non oem/rep wheels out there. 17's on a mk4 require commitment if you wanna go low. use 45 profile tyres not 40's cause you'll really be draggin ass then. there's a whole host of issues when it comes to lowering the mk4. it really depends on the look you want. if you just want the lowish (i use the term loosely) look without the commitment and hassle i'd recommend 18's and a 40mm drop. this is pretty low risk and hassle free and looks far better then standard.

Cheers for all the info lads, will hopefully get a few ideas and better understanding of what I'm at on sunday down in limerick, get to see what certain drops are like etc. I'm a complete newb at this so I appreciate the time guys.

And for the record I would of course like OEM wheels, but gotta see the budget by then! I know if you have patience there are some lovely 2nd hand OEM rims around...

OK, 17's are for def now, as I reckon the bit extra of tyre depth that you'd fit will leave it more comfortable. Next problem.. will it be better if I saved and did the work in one go? as in do the wheels and coils the same day? As i'll probably buy rims first, would it be unadvisable to fit them straight away? I know I'd prob have the "roller-skate" look for a while LOL..
I don't mind spending a bit extra, within reason, so opening another can of worms so to speak, what coils / lowering systems are best for not being too rough?

Coils can range from 300 to 2000 it depends on how much you have to spend. I have fk ak's (I think) coils, cost around 350 quid, jom's cost around 270. Whereas if you want quality and a big pocket something like H&R or koni's.

Don't put in lowering springs, they give sh1t ride comfort, and you'll end up spending more in the long term replacing the shocks.

A cup kit is another option (H&R do these as well), it is a set of uprated spring and shocks and are designed to work together, so the shocks are fine.

It's up to your self at the end of the day, if it was me I'd put the coils/kit in first and then the wheels as the ones you have on it are nice oem's. And you could avoid the jeep look.

I'd agree with that too.. If you can't do it all at once- Coils first.

Sorry to Hijack But Out of interest. How do you find the FK coils Vinny?

Sound job! I might just follow your lead as I have a good friend who's an FK agent...
Was just unsure of the springs settling too low on the stocks to then put the bigger wheels on would be bad.. but what the hell do i know??

Ah don't be like that!

maybe not the HID's now as headset on this alloy adventure! SUB box is only a 12 inch and small amp combo... as a bassist I love the low thump / warmness of bass in all music, and figured a sub, tuned rightly will equal lotsa bass, with not as much hearing loss!
EDIT:
also juI st think the bass is a bit lost in the big luggage compartment in my golfvan... tho when I'm on that note I should get ordering my 2 foot tall rear wing in candy yellow, 3 inch exhaust tip and the go-faster stripes!!

Yeah me too I really intend figuring out different set-ups over the summer, despite best advice, can see me doing the rims first as they're more noticable to me anyway.. and depending on how things going might organise coils towards the end of the summer, have me 21st in august which should fund a decent set of coils!
