Well after all my talk and questions i made my trip to the north on saturday and bought me a passat GT estate.

she's part broken but all the mechanicals are present and correct.

My current plan of action is as follows.

1) strip down golf.
remove front end, engine, box, shafts, exhaust

2) remove the clutch pedal from the passat (assuming its not an engine out job)

3) do clutch pedal conversion on golf

4) remove engine and box from passat and drop directly into the golf

5) plumb, wire and service

Good man John. Any plans for the Look

not much really, its pretty much done aesthetically, just cleaned up, gti 16v tail lights gti rear spoiler, smoked indicators and repeaters, resprayed small bumpers
black 14 inch steels

the only job left really is to respray the rubbing strips (halfords bumper paint is the business)
I might fit a jetta front end when i'm done too, i just always thought it looked better, the round lamps on such a square car never really worked for me.

i dont have any recent pics, I'll try and think of taking one in the morning

I swapped the entire loom, it was an 87 golf going into an 89 with the newer type loom so i thought it would be easier to change the whole lot!

Ive a set of smoked indicators for big bumpers, a complete jetta front end, and a gti rear spoiler if your interested.

I say keep the car exactly as it is...don't even wash it & it'll surprise a few people with 150+bhp in a "dirty old Golf"!

not massively bothered about keepin my cars washed it has to be said, although after a job like this it'll have to be done cos it'll be all paw marks.

the only engine mod planned kevin is to change the wrapping.

i reckon there'll be more than enough go for now

Will do,

and questions.

lots of questions.

like this one....

How do i take out the engine and box.

ok not quite that bad, but i've never done this on a front wheel drive before.

from what i can see the only issue is the driveshafts right?

open the hub nuts would be the first thing, but will they be able to pull back then (do they have much give in the sliding joints? do they have sliding joints?)

or do i need to undo them at the gearbox end?

or both?

how does the gearbox end work? just a ring of hex heads or something fancy?

will the gearbox spill its oil when i pull the shafts?

do i remove the clutch MC from inside the passat or under the bonnet?

thats all i have for now.

but dont worry there'll be more

(this is really here for my benefit as opposed to anyone elses.......)

To do:
remove parts from passat:

gearchange

remove parts from golf
engine/box

Fit parts to golf (in this order)
clutch pedal
pas system

gearchange
engine loom
GTI 16v brake servo
engine/box
rad/hoses
bodywork

buy parts
gti driveshafts
gti 16v exhaust
